In September in Colorado, the high altitude turns warm summer-like days into chilly nights. While the Eagle River makes its way through the Vail Valley, it changes its tune from gurgling noisily over rocks and shallow turns, to the hushed tones of deeper depths. Late in the day, when the sun is low, the air is filled with a wash of gold, and that water is icy cold.
