From a very young age, drawing, painting and making were creative pursuits. For my eighth birthday, my parents gave me an easel complete with jars of paint, brushes, and a large pad of paper. I dreamed of being an artist.

 

Classes in art making on the weekends and during the summer months kept me busy. I also learned the basics of sewing as a Junior Girl Scout, making my first dress. From then on my mother helped me as I tackled more complex sewing projects. In high school, I was sewing dresses for dances and clothes for summer vacation. I entered Temple University's Tyler School of Art majoring in Graphic Design and I continued to sew for special occasions.

My first job was a staff artist for a television station in the south. Designing and illustrating news graphics, public service announcements, and advertisements was a lot of fun and very fast paced. After I started my family, all of my jobs were free-lance and my sewing was limited. When I retired from an advertising career, I spent my time painting and sewing.

 

I am now a grandma. Sewing pjs, dresses, baby clothes, doll clothes, stuffed animals, and pillow covers for five grandchildren has been a joy. When the grands visit, some want to paint in the studio and some want to sew in the sewing room.

 

I'm enjoying sewing surgical caps. They are a colorful way for those working in that environment to express their individuality.
